The baby has landed.

Our baby Blueberry was born on December 21st. I am thrilled to have a solstice baby.

Everything started at 2 am on the morning of December 20th. Skye went into labor. We mostly went about our day until roughly 6 pm, when we called the doula, Little Bitty (wannabe doula), and midwife over to the house; Skye's parents were already there. Skye continued to labor with the six of us for the next 12 hours, making for a long night for everyone. It was also amazing. I am impressed at how seven people can come together and work toward a common goal. I am proud of everyone who was there, particularly Skye, who, of course, had the most painful part of it.

Unfortunately, labor stopped progressing at around 6 am. The midwife let us know, and Skye and I decided to go to a nearby hospital to finish off the labor. The doctor at the hospital informed us that the baby would have to come out via Cesarean section. We agreed, and baby Blueberry arrived at 9:25 am.

This was not what we were expecting. We signed up with a midwife for a natural home birth. We are both at peace with the way things went, though. Everyone made the right decisions at each point of the delivery: the midwife knew when to tell us that labor was not progressing, we knew to go to the hospital, and the doctor knew that a C-section was best—possibly only—option. I am very pleased that we decided to go with the midwife, in spite of the fact that we did not get our home birth.

Transition to parenthood has been rather smooth. It was surreal to have a baby at first, but I am rapidly getting used to it. Blueberry has been fun to have around, yet has not been very fussy (yet). I am looking forward to seeing him grow up.

The semester is done. It is amazing how quickly it goes.

The small news is that we are buying a car tomorrow. My parents are buying a new Prius, and we are buying their old one. We are excited about this. The bad news, especially to regular my weblog readers, is that this is the beginning of the end for my electric car. This is sad, but we do not need three cars. Heck, I am not even sure that we need two, but I like our Echo a lot and Skye wants to have two cars. Happily, I think that I will wait until spring to sell it, since it will be much more popular among buyers then (it has no heat, no defrost, and is short 8 volts until it warms up enough that I can stand to work on it in the garage).

The big news is that the baby is coming any day now. The official due date is tomorrow. Finals are done, so I am all ready for the baby (although it would be nice if he waited until after I got the new car tomorrow).

The semester is winding down. There is not much left to do but grade. In fact, I have my last non-exam class in 30 minutes, but even that will be evaluations and review of the semester. Skye and I decided that this is a pretty relaxing time in a professor's life (a student likely has a different opinion).

I am hoping to spent a lot of time on research in the next week, although I think this might be difficult. I have reached a milestone in my research, and it is sometimes difficult to start new phases. My computer program is doing almost exactly what I want it to do, but I now need to use it to determine the pattern that is (hopefully) occurring. Since I have a sense of accomplishment from creating the computer program, I fear that I might dwell on that rather than starting to look for a pattern.

I am in the middle of proctoring a really hard 6 hour math exam. The students are volunteers.

Now I am going to code a computer program. This is all for this post, except...

...BSG makes me happy.
